Introduction
Diabetes
mellitus is a condition that requires daily management by the person
with diabetes supported by an infrastructure of healthcare facilities
and trained professionals. Due to the increasing prevalence of diabetes
and the cost and suffering imposed by the disease and its complications,
diabetes is indeed one of, if not the most important chronic disease.
In addition to personal suffering, it accounts for a significant amount
of national health care spending.
Objectives
of the Symposium
The
Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Symposium on Practical Diabetes
for Primary Care Physicians aims to help in improving management of
diabetes especially at primary care level. Participants are expected
to be able to:

Appreciate the medical (and psychosocial) problems of diabetes especially
in the Asian Region
· Appreciate the need for good control of diabetes and associated
diseaes
· Understand the pathophysiological basis of management of diabetes
and complications
· Apply knowledge gained during the symposium to further improve
care for diabetes in the community
